Day 02: Sonamarg (7,800ft) to Nichnai (11,500ft) via Shekdur Night stay in Camp.
Today as soon as you ready you will have to start your trekking. Totally you will travel 9 kilometres, which will cover climbing of small mountains and descending terrains, as well. You will be fully exited to view the majestic view all through the way. By the end of the day, you will have to reach Nichnai which is at 11,500 feet above sea level. To reach that location, you will cover a place named Shekdur. As you start your trek, after travelling about 3 kilometres you will be able to see a roadside dhaba on the right hand side. This will be your one and only chance in which you can fill your bags with all eatables and liquids because after leaving this place, there is no more stop which you will be able to preserve. After this point, you can only view the tourists who are accompanying you. Other than them you cannot see anybody until you reach your final destination of your trek that is Naranag.
From the dhaba, you can see a road heading right heading away from the main road. It is a path of mud and snones in it. You will have to take the same route to head towards Shekdur. The trek will have Sindh River on one side and a mud trek taken by travellers on the other. You can observe a route taken by jeeps towards the right away from the main road from the Dhaba. Now the altitude starts rising, and you will be heading upwards. One of the most beautiful views can be seen just after travelling for some time in the same direction. The trek will bend towards left, and all you will view is green meadows all over the place. It is a full view of Sonamarg. After continuing the path for about 1 hour, you will enter a forest. It will have trees of pine and maple. You will face a brook along the tree line and after that altitude starts rising giving you a feeling of climbing hard terrain. The only reason you won’t have a second thought to cover the area is that it is covered with maple tree. Travelling in the forest of Kashmir is one of the best experiences that anyone can have. The smile will be in your face while covering the complete trek and you won’t care about loss of physical strength. The trek will be as it is for half an hour and somewhere you will be able to view some odd villages close to you. As you climb the mountain and gain more altitude, you can again view the beautiful view of Sonamarg that you have left behind.
After such a long climb, you can give your feet some rest as, after that, you will be facing some slopes which will direct you down the meadow. The hill will have some huts and sliver birch trees scattered somewhere over the area. There are many varieties of trees, which can be seen in the meadow, and it gives you the right feeling to experience the different trees at a place. There will many brooks on the way as if they are lost and are searching for their parents. On out right you will see a hill covered with snow. That point is Shekdur, and you will have to go there.
Shekdur is famous for its Bhoj trees all over the place. You can relax a bit and enjoy the nature to its fullest. You can even click photos as such scenic beauty cannot be viewed every day. After relaxing a bit and giving yourself some rest, you will have to resume the trek and head towards Nichnai. By the time, you reach Nichnai it will be an evening so you will have to have your lunch in the woods itself. The sun will play hide and seek all the way you complete the trek in the forest. It is all due to the Bhoj trees that restrict sun rays to enter. The trails will descent and you will find it to travel comfortably to move for about 1 hour in that direction. After 1 hour, you will reach a river valley. It is the beginning of Nichnai. Again the terrain become a bit tough as altitude is rising and you will have to up climb the hill. So it is required to take some rest at regular intervals of time and cover the distance. The trek will become more difficult up there as after 30 minutes the path will be rocky, and chances are there to skid all the way. Covering the distance for an hour will make you reach the final destination for the day. All of you will be very tired as it was a real task for all of them to climb such a difficult terrain. Give your legs a bit of rest in the tents put up at Nichnai and sleep soon as you all will be exhausted.
Day 03: Nichnai (11,500ft) to Vishansarlake (12,00ft)
All the trekkers are supposed to start their trek from 8 “o” clock early in the morning and start heading towards Vishankar Lake, which is the destination for the day. Today most of the trek will be covered in the meadows and along the way the entire tourists will absorb the beauty of environment and reach by evening easily. Vishankar Lake is one of the most stunning places of Kashmir. You will be travelling through Nichnai pass, which you can view from the current location. You will follow the river bank for half an hour and you reach the left side of the bank. You will continue to move towards the left bank enjoying the river for about one hour. At every step altitude is gained but it won’t affect much as the height is gradual, and it’s not steep. It will take an hour to ascend the pass.
As you move, you will find yourself below the mountain, and the colour of the lake will be blue signifying the purity and nascent of it. The pass that you had seen is just like deceiving of eyes. It is not just a pass but more than that. Even train has to take two times turn to see that pass. This will be the last checkpoint where you can make any telephonic conversation with anybody because after leaving this place, there won’t be any network in your mobile phones to make contact from the outside world.
Nichnai pass resembles like a tunnel covered with mountains from the entire place. It is about 13,500 feet above the sea level, and it will be a very difficult task to move ahead as you can feel the strain in the legs as you climb more towards the destination. Due to lack of oxygen and more physical activity there may me headaches. As you reach the top of Nichnai pass, the trek becomes little comfortable as you will descent downwards. But rocky terrain makes your legs hurt and hence proper precautions must be measured for the same. After walking for an hour, the beauty of the place will make you forget all the tiredness you have faced till now. The grassland with red flowers makes the place heavenly, and your eyes will seek to view such beauty again and again. A river started from this place, and you can see a huge waterfall which you will leave behind soon.
From this point, the terrain is very flat and even. There won’t be any problem in covering the path. One way you can view the beautiful mountains of Himalayas and on the other side will be mountains of Laddakh which is considered as the coldest region of India. Get yourself braced for the stream of water which you will have to face. You cannot expect normal water at such an altitude, and it will be quiet freezing. After travelling more half an hour, Nichnai valley will end, and you can observe that there will be another stream of water flowing exactly perpendicularly in your way. It is one of the streams which that start from Vishankar Lake. It is located at a higher level and hence the lake cannot be seen from the current position. You can put up your tents anywhere near the lake and this place will be very ideal place for campaigning. It is the lake which is surrounded by 4 mountains. Vishankar Lake is located just 100 feet above your campaign site, and you can spend your day over there enjoying the wonderful sunshine. Lake is known for its fishing but to do that you will need to take permission. Anyhow you will be heading towards Gadsar so sleep soon and gain some energy.
Day 04: Acclimatization + Rest Day at Vishansar
Day 05: Vishansar (12,000ft) to Gadsar(12,000ft) via Kishansar lake and Gadsar Pass (13,750ft)
After getting up in the morning, you will head towards Gadsar pass. To reach this destination, you will come across Kishansarlake and Gadsar pass. Kishansar Lake is one of the great lakes of Kashmir which everybody seeks to visit at least once in their lifetime. Just after traversing half kilometre you will reach the lake and enjoy the beauty of it. It will not take more than 1 hour to reach this place. It is 500 feet higher thanVishansar and lies just below Kishansar peek. There are two ways. If you move ahead towards right, then you will reach the lake. The view from this point can’t be described in words as the feeling should be experienced practically. You can capture those moments in your cameras and save it for future. If you are tired enough, then you may opt to choose to cover the distance in flatter trails. The distance between the two lakes is about 1 kilometre, but you cannot view any point in which both lakes are meeting each other.
The path that you are following will lead to a ridge and at the edge of the ridge is Gadsar pass. Many beautiful meadows can be visualised after Kishansar Lake. The trek now becomes very narrow just like a lane, and it will lead to the top of the mountain. After traversing about 2 hours, you will reach the top point of the ridge. Along the way of Kashmir’s lake trek at the midpoint you will see the most beautiful scene where Kishansar and Vishansar are seen all together. Following the same path and enjoying the beauty of it will lead you to Gadsar pass, which is the highest point of your trek of 7 days.
There are many small lakes which can be seen very easily evenly spread over a small region. There may be some snow along the path when you will move downwards. Many beautiful meadows with red and white iris flowers will make your day very beautiful. Iris flowers are an indication that you are very near to Gadkar pass. Gadkar is nothing but a snow clad cliff top. One side there will be snow and on the other side there will be blue flowers blooming. It is about 12,500 kilometres above the sea level. There is no proper well defined and appropriate region where you can camp for the day at Gadsar. So you will have to spend your night at the army camp, which is near gadsar. If you want to trek any further, than permission from army will be required. Night will be in the base camp and should be ready for the next morning for another day of adventurous trek.
Day 06: Gadsar (12,000ft) to Satsar (12,000ft)
You will head towards the stretch of water which is at the left hand side after having your breakfast. By the evening, you will reach Satsar which is 12,000 feet above the sea level. If you are able to cross the stream, then it is a short cut to the destination. By the end of the day, you will cover 10 kilometres. It is recommended to wet your legs and cross the stream as the terrain will be uneven and pretty difficult to traverse. As soon as you reach the other side of the stream, you will climb the mountain just in front of you. The path along the tree line must be followed by all the travellers. After travelling for more than one and half an hour will make you cover more 1100 feet. To your right there will be many dangerous craters. By now you will reach Meagandob.
The scenery is very pleasing over here. Tall standing mountains and the green meadows with flowers makes your day. Satsar comprises of 7 lakes. All the lakes will not have water. It completely depends on the time of trekking that how many watery lakes you can view. There will an army check post just after crossing the ridge. It is the third line of defence, and from now you must have permission to trek further. First beautiful lake can be viewed on the way after travelling 15 minutes from the army camp. The lake is pretty big and is one of the most picturesque locations. At the end of the day, settle down in an appropriate place to camp.
Day 07:Satsar (12,000ft) to Gangabal twin lakes (11,500ft)
Freshen up as fast as you can as today another 9 kilometres you will have to cover. It might take about 6 hours to complete today’s journey to reach Gangabal. It won’t be an easy trail, and it will have more ups and downs at regular intervals. As journey progresses, you will head towards the widest area of Satsar Lake. The path will have full of boulders, and you will have to jump over each one of them. After traversing about 30 minutes, you will view the forest on the left hand side and a big 1000 feet ridge on your right. There will be some high altitude with zigzag pattern all the way to climb to the top of the ridge. But is not the end of your climb as from the top of the ridge you will view two more ridges which is also supposed to be traversed. The path is very rocky hence makes it more difficult to traverse. The zigzag pattern and up climbing can make your legs feel tired. As you look behind, there will be some small huts and pine trees.
It will almost take 2 hours to cover all the three ridges, and after that you won’t have much stamina to continue further. So take some rest and retain some energy. From the top of the ridge, you can see some beautiful scenery and can take your heart out of your body. It is just a treat to your eyes to watch two lakes lying next to each other. The biggest of all the lakes is Gangabal, and it can also be viewed from this point. You have to travel more than 1400 feet to reach your destination for the day. As you move ahead, you will come across a stream, which can bring some positive vibes and energy within you. You will be descending, but it may be risky because of the gravel present on the way. The descent is very steep and for travelling for about 45 minutes will lead you to a beautiful green land. Trek along the way to see the tree lane again on your path. You will reach the base, but that is not the ending of today’s trek. Take some rest and continue again to head towards the lake.
After traversing for some time, you will come across Nundkol Lake. The lake is not that clean all because of travellers who camp over there and do not clean the place before leaving. Therefore, the beauty of the lake goes diminishing in your eyes. Nundkol Lake is just below Harmukh peak. The glaciers of Harmukh are all over the mountain. The destination is just 30 minutes’ walk from Nundkol. Both the river is joined by a stream of water. It will be a foolish idea to cross as the water flows in a ferocious speed. It is recommended to use the man-made bridge to reach the beginning of Gangabal Lake. You can set up your camp for the day along the bank of the lake and enjoy its beauty giving yourself the deserving rest.
Day 08: Gangabal (11,500ft) to Naranag (7,450ft)
Today is the last day of your trekking experience, and you will have to face one last day to cover the most part of your trek. From Gangabal, you will move along the trees. One thing should be kept in mind that the path should be covered along the ridge. You should not travel along the stream. From this point, you can get your cellular network, and calls can be made after crossing 30 minutes in the same direction. The trek along the ridge is completed, and you will end up with a fabulous green meadow. Turn around once to see the glaciers of Harmukh peak. You will experience the wonderful trekking of Kashmir. The meadows will be covered with flowers of different colours, and you will cross the beautiful meadow with ease.
After walking for an hour, you will face some tree line of pine trees. Now you can see some people as some houses can be seen slowly in the deep forest. In the forest, you will have to traverse a bit carefully so that you are not injured at the last day of the trek. There is no sign of any altitude gain for about 6 kilometres. The altitude gain is very gradual which will not affect your trek. Slowly you will move to 11000 feet from 10,800 feet to move out of the forest region. At the end of the trail, there is a sudden descent, and there will be a drastic change of losing 3000 feet of altitude in 4 kilometres. Along the way, you may find some co-trekkers going towards Gangabal.
From the current location Naranag can be seen very clearly but it is still a bit far. Along the way, there will be some villages of Naranag with stony path. Slowly head towards the main road of Naranag and hence the trek ends up here. There will be cabs waiting for you at the main road, and they will drop you till the hotels or guesthouse of Srinagar. This will end up your trek giving you the perfect experience of the beauty of Kashmir.
